Lowering Fuel, Insurance, and Parking Costs - Segway:

Trevor Baker, an investment adviser, emerges from his river-valley condo each morning, heads up Bellamy Hill, into his downtown office building and up the elevator. He parks the Segway by his desk.

He estimates his daily commute costs him a penny. He's also saving $175-a-month on a parking spot. Liability insurance is covered by his home policy. The insurance rate on his diesel Jetta also dropped because he's no longer commuting by car.

The savings will soon cover the initial $7,000 cost for the Segway.  Yes, he could save even more by walking. But walking up Bellamy Hill is a hike and a sweat, especially in a business suit.

Besides, Baker is a fan of utilitarian technology.

Project P.U.M.A.: GM and Segway are developing an electrically powered, two-seat prototype vehicle that has only two wheels. It could allow people to travel around cities more quickly, safely, quietly and cleanly - and all at a much lower total cost.

Of course, not everyone will be able to use a Segway or P.U.M.A. system. However, not everyone is able to readily access a few LRT stations either.
